Better Together

On World Environment Day 2020, the foundations for the preservation of Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca join a new manifesto together, with more than 1600 signatories from all sectors, including both the civil society and private sectors.

The Mallorca Preservation Foundation, the Menorca Preservation Fund and IbizaPreservation have jointly adhered to this national petition to Congress, The “Manifesto for a Sustainable Recovery”, which demands sustainability to be a priority in any economic reactivation plan after the Covid-19 crisis.

Just a few months ago, climate emergencies were being declared in a wide range of places across the planet and this situation continues to be the same context to this day. For this reason, it is essential that the environment be a transversal axis in the post-Covid recovery plan.

The best actions come from consensus. For this reason, we ask that all sectors come together in this alliance to support and implement a stimulus package based on best practices and that allows us to move towards a more prosperous, sustainable, healthy and resilient society.

“The Manifesto for a Sustainable Recovery” has more than 1600 adherent members. The signatories cover social, economic, cultural, associative, scientific, religious and professional sectors, from all over Spain. It includes highly affected sectors such as hospitality and tourism and also the agri-food sector, as well as sectors in the midst of full energy transitions.

The statement, which has been forwarded to the Social and Economic Reconstruction Committee, is based on the criteria of the Alliance for a green recovery launched a few weeks ago on a Europe-wide level. The signatories are asking that the stimulus policies created by EU institutions as a result of Covid-19, in addition to being effective from an economic and social point of view, be aligned with sustainability policies and with the European Green Deal.

The initiative has been collaboratively promoted by ECODES, the Spanish non-profit foundation, in addition to the Spanish Green Growth Group, SEO/BirdLife and, in a private capacity, by researchers from the Basque Center for Climate Change (BC3), the Royal Institute Elcano and the Polytechnic University of Madrid (ItdUPM).

“Our health depends on the health of the planet, therefore we have to reconcile the economy with the health of the biosphere,” said Victor Viñuales, director of ECODES. “In addition, the new public debt will be paid by the new generations, and it is only fair that they finance actions that benefit them.”

The Mallorca Preservation Foundation, the Menorca Preservation Fund and IbizaPreservation are part of the Conservation Collective, a network of philanthropic foundations dedicated to the protection, conservation and recovery of the natural environment throughout the world. IbizaPreservation was the first of this network, which currently has nine members.
