Summary of the project
Study, research, validation and edition of a brochure with the main honey flowers of Menorca.
Description of the project
Bees are vital to the present and future of the planet, but they are threatened and in decline. Practising beekeeping is becoming increasingly complex, there are more adversities to overcome and the knowledge needed to deal with them is not within the reach of most people. The link between soil, plants and bees is the lighthouse and compass that guide us on this beekeeping journey. The creation of this guide is the result of the joint work between different beekeepers from Menorca and two experts in beekeeping botany:
– Jaume Cambra Sánchez, beekeeper, doctor in Biology and professor of Botany at the University of Barcelona.
– Juan Manuel Vergara Lopez, beekeeper, Master in Plant Biology in Mediterranean conditions.
The work will include a list of Menorcan honey plants with specific information on each one of them, including their characteristics, location, flowering period, the plant’s reproduction system, sowing and planting calendar, photograph of the plant and its flowers, etc. They will be classified according to their typology (herbaceous, shrubby and arboreal), their forage interest, whether they are a source of pollen, a source of nectar, good for honey, etc.
Main Objective
To develop a useful tool for beekeepers, since knowing the plants and their characteristics will help us to understand and improve our relationship with nature. Many plants are rejected, treated as weeds because they are not forage or ornamental plants. Plants are the source of food for bees, and it is our obligation to know them in order to improve their wellbeing and not depend on human food at certain times of the year.
