Primary Impact

Reducing pollution

Summary of the project

After the success of the first 3 expeditions in 2020, 2021 and 2022 and our desire to continue raising environmental awareness in Menorca and the request of the 0 Plastic community to participate in new expeditions, we have decided to launch the “4th 0 Plastic Menorca Diving Expedition” under the slogan “Invisible Plastic”, i.e. the plastic accumulated on the seabed that we do not see but that significantly affects biodiversity and the marine environment. According to the Oceana Organisation, 99% of the plastic waste thrown into the sea accumulates on the seabed.

Environmental Focus

80% of the marine litter on the Mediterranean coast comes from tourism, and 95% of it is plastic. 99% of plastic ends up in the deep sea, with no data on how many centuries it takes to decompose in these environments
The traveler is not sufficiently aware and involved in environmental conservation.

  • We select and bring together a group of more than 30 volunteers coming from all over Spain to involve them in an immersive experience with the mission to increase their environmental awareness and inspire others around them to get involved.
  • We promote a change in consumption habits and we encourage them to make environmental proposals in the companies they work for.

Social, Economic and Cultural Outcomes

  • Encouraging people to have a greater appreciation of the natural world and its value
  • Encouraging governments, public institutions and media to act in ways that support the natural world
  • Supporting businesses and their employees to better preserve, protect, and regenerate the natural world
  • Encouraging changes in public/consumer behaviour to better preserve, protect, and regenerate the natural world;Reduced waste/better waste management

WHAT WE DO

We select and bring together a group of more than 30 volunteers coming from all over Spain to involve them in an immersive experience with the mission to increase their environmental awareness and inspire others around them to get involved.

We promote a change in consumption habits and we encourage them to make environmental proposals in the companies they work for.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  • Raise awareness and sensitise about the problem of plastic pollution.
  • To change participants’ behaviour through underwater plastic collections in order to reduce, reject and reuse plastic, especially single-use plastic.
  • Promote conscious and responsible tourism on the island of Menorca as a successful example of caring for the Mediterranean.

AGENDA
Dates: 22-25 September 2023
Volunteers: 35 pax (from the island and the mainland)

Groups: There will be 2 groups: 1 diving group and 1 snorkelling group. We will go out together and we will try to collect plastic in the same area. Places for plastic collection (23rd and 24th September): Illa del Aire, Cala Rafalet and Port de Maó (depending on the weather conditions), leaving from the Port of Mahón.

Beach Talks: We will have environmental experts who will talk about the damage of plastic on marine fauna and flora, waste management and leaks, the problem of microplastics, solutions and alternatives.
