Exhibition “Xarxes”: artistic works and handcrafted products made from fishing nets
Throughout the first half of July, PescArt Menorca and the artist Magda Triay will be exhibiting in Es Mercadal the works and handcrafted products made from with discarded fishing nets
PescArt Menorca, the circular economy project promoted by Menorca Preservation through the Plastic Free Menorca Alliance, will present together with the artist Magda Triay the exhibition “Xarxes”, at Ca n’Ángel (Es Mercadal). The common thread of the exhibition, which will open on Monday the 3rd, will be the artistic works and handcrafted products made from discarded fishing nets.
Along with the artist’s watercolours, a series of tapestries made entirely from fishing nets recovered from the collaborating ports, Fornells and Ciutadella, will be on display. There will also be products from the group of craftswomen involved in the project, such as necklaces, key rings, earrings, bags and purses by Júlia Triay – Artespai, candle-holders and flowerpots by Scøne, key rings by Barba-Rossa, a pictorial work by Sílvia Vivó, and so on. Also on display will be net tapestries made by 2nd and 3rd year ESO students from the IES Biel Martí secondary school in Ferreries.
The inauguration, during which the new promotional video of the initiative will be screened, will take place on Monday the 3rd at 20h. The exhibition will be open daily until Thursday 13th July, from 11am to 1.30pm and from 7pm to 9.30pm, except on Sundays.
Finally, to bring the environmental problems of fishing nets closer to the public, as well as to provide them with ideas and inspiration for making the most of them, on Saturday the 8th, during the morning, Magda Triay will offer a workshop on recycling fishing nets, free of charge and open to the general public, with the support of the Es Mercadal Town Council.
