Plastic Collection at Arenal d’en Castell
‘Our Plastic Free Menorca Alliance with over 40 volunteers remove 22.8 kg of plastic waste from Arenal d’en Castell’

Yesterday, the Plastic Free Menorca Alliance, promoted by Menorca Preservation, removed in less than 2 hours 22,8 kgs of plastic waste from the Arenal d’en Castell beach, thanks to the collaboration of 43 volunteers. In addition, during the collection, organised thanks to the collaboration of the TUI Care Foundation, the volunteers had the opportunity to contribute to the classification of the waste collected, among which 285 laminar plastics, 149 plastic bottle caps and 110 cigarette butts stood out.
During the day, the Plastic Free Menorca Alliance together with the TUI Care Foundation, explained to the participants the long-term vision of the collaboration, highlighting some of the key initiatives such as the creation of the first plastic-free beach in Menorca, the promotion of the certification of plastic-free businesses and the expansion of the recycling project for discarded fishing nets PescArt Menorca.
These activities are part of the TUI Care Foundation’s ‘Destination Zero Waste Menorca’ programme, an initiative that drives the circular economy and promotes the elimination of waste and the reuse of resources. In addition, the initiative focuses on raising awareness about recycling, supporting innovative solutions led by the local community.
Marta Pérez López, coordinator of the Plastic Free Menorca Alliance, said: “We are very grateful to all the people who offered to help us in this collection. We will now analyse all this waste and add it to our database to continue improving our knowledge of plastic pollution in Menorca”.
Branislav Mizenko, representative of the TUI Care Foundation, said: “I am very happy to start our collaboration with Menorca Preservation. Through the Destination Zero Waste programme, we work to empower the island community to tackle plastic pollution. The project engages businesses, residents and tourists in reducing waste, promoting upcycling and protecting natural habitats. Through certifications, workshops and beach clean-ups, we encourage sustainable behaviour and integrate environmental responsibility into the local economy”.
Finally, this collaboration, which will last until 2027, will contribute to continue promoting other important actions carried out by the Alliance, such as the creation of an innovative Plastic Lab to recycle plastic waste with a programme of workshops open to the public, or the collection of data to monitor plastic pollution in Menorca through outings with educational centres, social organisations, volunteers, “plastic-free” businesses and the tourism sector.
