Learning how to fall in love with the Sea

Seeing is Believing: Hands-On Workshops to Learn How to Fall in Love with the Sea

The educational workshops of “Seeing is Believing” are now underway – an initiative by GOB Menorca, supported by Menorca Preservation and Marilles Foundation, aimed at strengthening the connection between local communities and the sea. By the end of June, more than 95 children from various schools across the island are expected to have taken part in the project.

Understanding to Preserve: A Respectful Look at the Sea

Learning to love the marine environment also involves understanding its fragility and the delicate balance that sustains it. For this reason, the project focuses on encouraging respectful and non-invasive observation of the marine environment, avoiding direct contact with organisms. In doing so, it promotes a more sustainable and mindful relationship with nature.

Through both theoretical and practical activities in marine surroundings, schoolchildren have had the chance to explore first-hand the ecological value of marine ecosystems, discovering the species that inhabit them and understanding how the health of the sea is closely connected to what happens on land – from our everyday actions to how we use our territory. The ultimate aim is to convey the importance of maintaining balance between both environments.

An Experience That Leaves a Lasting Impression

The response to this first edition has been outstanding: in fact, the initial number of places was expanded to meet early demand. So far, 68 children from different municipalities of Menorca have taken part in activities held on the beaches of Binibeca and Algaiarens; in the coming weeks, the programme will conclude with two more sessions at Arenal d’en Castell or Cala’n Porter.

In the long term, “Seeing is Believing” aims to foster a collective awareness that inspires people to protect, care for and defend Menorca’s marine ecosystems and coastal areas.

Víctor Carretero, Marine Environment Coordinator at GOB Menorca:

“Activities like these are essential for learning how to observe – from a relaxed standpoint – the marvellous marine ecosystems the island has to offer.”
