ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROJECT
PlasticLab Menorca is a pioneering initiative promoted by Menorca Preservation through the Plastic Free Menorca Alliance. It was created to address the environmental and social challenges associated with plastic pollution on the island. In response to this issue, PlasticLab aims to transform the way plastic waste is managed in Menorca by promoting circular economy principles and sustainability.
The workshop laboratory is inspired by the open-source Precious Plastic model, a global initiative launched in 2013 to democratise plastic recycling through affordable machinery and community-led processes. Following this philosophy, PlasticLab seeks to transform plastic waste into useful and durable products while encouraging innovation, environmental education and community collaboration.
The workshop will focus not only on plastic waste management but also on education and awareness-raising. Through practical workshops, it will engage primary and secondary schools, vocational training centres, businesses, entrepreneurs, social organisations and the wider public, demonstrating how plastic waste can be transformed into valuable resources. The ultimate objective of this educational approach is to foster a cultural shift towards more responsible and sustainable consumption, driven by innovative processes.
The PlasticLab workspace will comprise a total area of 80 square metres, including a small office, storage area, plastic washing station and workshop equipped with recycling machinery. The facility will house the necessary equipment for plastic recycling, including a shredder to break down plastics into manageable fragments, an extruder to shape recycled materials into new forms, and a press. These tools will enable locally collected plastics to be processed and transformed into commercially viable products.
PlasticLab represents an innovative solution for reducing the amount of plastic waste sent to landfill or discarded into the environment. However, its impact extends beyond environmental benefits. The project is also expected to generate positive social outcomes by involving local residents and vulnerable groups in educational and practical activities, as well as economic benefits through the creation of new employment opportunities and the development of value-added recycled products.
During its initial years of operation, the project benefits from start-up funding that has enabled the purchase of machinery and will now support the launch of the initiative, including the delivery of educational workshops and awareness-raising activities, as well as the development of its long-term strategic direction.
