Celebration in Punta Prima – 27 September

Menorca Preservation hosts a day in Punta Prima with talks, workshops and experiences for the whole family

Talks with experts, nature workshops and artistic experiences will all come together in one space to showcase two key projects driven by the NGO: the Plastic Free Menorca Alliance and the Fòrum Illa de l’Aire.

Menorca Preservation, the non-profit foundation that works to promote the preservation of Menorca’s natural heritage and strengthen the local environmental network, is organising a day full of free activities for the public in Punta Prima on 27 September.

The event will highlight the work of two of its projects with the greatest community impact: the Plastic Free Menorca Alliance, which promotes the reduction of plastic pollution on the island, and the Fòrum Illa de l’Aire, a space for dialogue and action to advance participatory and community governance of the Illa de l’Aire Marine Reserve.

PLASTIC FREE MENORCA FEST

The Plastic Free Menorca Alliance, the platform launched by Menorca Preservation and made up of GOB Menorca, OBSAM-IME, Leader Island of Menorca Association and 0 Plastic Menorca, is celebrating its 5th anniversary with the Plastic Free Menorca Fest.

The festival will focus on promoting talks with national experts on the problem of plastics in different fields, outdoor activities in collaboration with organisations such as the Societat Ornitològica de Menorca, Palma Aquarium, OBSAM-IME, MARE Awards and 0 Plastic Menorca, as well as a space for organisations and a market of alternatives to help reduce plastic consumption.

Talks with experts

The festival will feature specialists in sustainability, health and biodiversity, who will give talks on the terrace of the Básico restaurant:

11:00 – Patricia Reina and Fernando Gómez, creators of the renowned blog Vivir sin Plástico, will open the programme with a talk on “Is it possible to live without plastic?”.

12:00 – Dr Alba Ruiz (Hospital La Fe, Valencia) will address “Plastics and health: what are we breathing, eating and carrying?”.

13:00 – Juan Ceballo (University of Cádiz) will present “Nature in danger: the threats of plastic”, followed by a round table with Beatriz Ríos of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography and Debora Morrison and Marco Magazzu of the Palma Aquarium Foundation.

Workshops and experiences

The festival also offers activities and workshops for all ages, with limited places and prior registration:

09:00 – Plastic collection with volunteers and the 0 Plastic Menorca team.

15:00 – Practical workshop on responding to injured marine fauna, led by the Palma Aquarium Foundation.

15:00 – Discover the marine values with OBSAM-IME and learn how to photograph them with the MARE Awards team.

17:00 – Birdwatching in the Illa de l’Aire Marine Reserve with the Societat Ornitològica de Menorca.

17:00 – Creative recycling workshop with artist Magda Triay, collaborator of the creative recycling and circular economy initiative PescArt Menorca.

Organisations’ space and responsible marketplace

From 10:00 to 19:00, attendees will also be able to meet local organisations actively working against plastic, and discover and purchase creative proposals to reduce their plastic footprint in daily life.

The Plastic Free Menorca Fest is supported financially by Depeche Mode and the Swiss watch brand Hublot, channelled through Conservation Collective, the global network of foundations of which Menorca Preservation is a member.

FÒRUM ILLA DE L’AIRE

The Fòrum Illa de l’Aire is a citizen participation group established in February 2025 to advance towards shared and community management of the Illa de l’Aire Marine Reserve.

As part of this day in Punta Prima, the project will present an artistic and educational activity: while artist Giuditta Bussetti completes a mural inspired by the Reserve, from 10:00 to 12:00 on Punta Prima beach there will be an introductory workshop on scientific and naturalist illustration, led by Fine Arts graduate Marga Moll. The activity, limited to 15 places and requiring prior registration, will allow participants to discover a marine species from the Reserve through drawing, learning to identify its anatomical and ecological features and to represent them in a scientific sketch.

At the same time, the group Sketchers Menorca will hold an open urban sketching session in the same space. Three different artistic perspectives – mural, scientific illustration and urban sketching – will converge at the end of the session in a shared space to showcase and enjoy all the works created.

The Fòrum Illa de l’Aire is a project promoted by Menorca Preservation with the collaboration of the Marilles Foundation, supported by Leader Island of Menorca and with technical involvement from OBSAM-IME and GOB Menorca.

A celebration for the whole family

The day is designed as a participatory gathering, combining scientific dissemination, educational activities and direct action for environmental conservation.
