Over 2,000 children reached across 5 Learn Through Surfing editions
The “Learn Through Surfing” Project Gains Ground in Menorca: Over 2,000 Reached Across 5 Editions

Today, coinciding with International Surfing Day (21 June), the 5th edition of the environmental awareness project Learn Through Surfing comes to an end. The project is run by the non-profit organisation Surf and Clean, with support from the Spanish Surfing Federation. Since its launch in 2021, this educational programme has reached over 2,000 primary and secondary school pupils from schools across Menorca. The initiative also benefits from the involvement of two local organisations responsible for delivering the programme: Paddle Tour Menorca and Surf&Sail Menorca.
David Blanco, President of Surf and Clean, highlights: “The project has grown organically and we’ve created a healthy community of organisations and individuals who support it. Over these five seasons we’ve planted a seed that is slowly growing, but with strong roots. Many schools take part year after year, and the changes are becoming noticeable.”
In addition, since last year, the project has had the support of students on work placements from the vocational course “Guide in the Natural Environment and Leisure Time” offered at IES Cap de Llevant.
Lluis Gomila, manager of Paddle Tour Menorca, says: “We’re very happy to see how this project continues to grow, year after year, reaching more and more students from our island, from our home. It’s a source of pride to be able to promote good behaviour — not just on the beach, but in each student’s daily life. Ultimately, taking care of the sea is essential for maintaining a healthy life, both for the ecosystem and for ourselves.” He adds: “I’d especially like to thank the students from IES Cap de Llevant for their work placements — it’s wonderful to see them put their theoretical knowledge into practice through a project like this. It makes us very proud.”
Christopher Kilcawley, manager of Surf&Sail Menorca, notes:“We’re really pleased to be able to share this sport and passion for the sea with students from our island. It’s also great to encourage them to value the environment they live in from a young age, and to teach them to contribute in small ways each day.”
He adds: “This year we were lucky to witness the spectacular regeneration of Son Xoriguer beach, which allowed us to carry out the activities more freely, safely and enjoyably.”
Five Years of “Learning Through Surfing” in Menorca
The project arrived on the island in 2021 with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of caring for and preserving our natural environment, while also encouraging students to build healthier relationships with themselves, their peers and their surroundings. To achieve this, the Surf and Clean team combines experiential learning both in classrooms and on beaches, using the educational potential of surfing to promote values such as cooperation, equality, inclusion, ecology, prevention and community-building.
Thanks to ongoing support from the Consell Insular and Menorca Preservation, the project has developed steadily over these five years, growing organically thanks to the commitment of teachers and the enthusiasm of pupils.
Sara D’Eustacchio, from Menorca Preservation, emphasises: “For Menorca Preservation, it’s incredibly exciting to see this initiative continue to grow year after year, expanding its reach while deepening its impact. It’s a joy to see how it resonates with teachers, families and, above all, in the hearts of the students. The sea remains an unknown world for many people. That’s why our mission is clear: to awaken a deep connection with the sea so that we learn to love it, respect it and protect it as it deserves — together, all year round.”
