The Minister for the Ecological Transition, endorses in Europe Menorca to become a leader in energetic transition

Teresa Ribera poses Arias Cañete her support for the Island to become a spearhead of the decarbonisation process.

The Minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, has taken a firm step for Menorca to lead the energy transition and access the economic and strategic support of the European Union. She has sent a letter to the European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Arias Cañete, declaring her support for Menorca participating in the Clean Energy for EU Islands initiative and its commitment to this project. Giving recognition and support to this Menorcan candidacy. The initiative aims to take the island as the spearhead of the decarbonisation and energy transition and Menorca is a possible pilot renewable area.

The minister reminds the European Commissioner that the Consell, being aware of this initiative, expressed in April its interest in participating in the proposal and working closely with the European Commission. To do this, a comprehensive roadmap to achieve the goal has to be implemented.

It highlights the Island as a Biosphere Reserve and points out that “it is an international reference of effort in environmental protection and conservation”. However, she says that the low penetration of renewable energy “it is paradoxical” despite “having enough potential of renewable resource for self-supply.” This situation implies “high economic, environmental and social costs as a result of the loss of capital, environmental degradation due to polluting emissions and the impact on residents’ health”.  The minister remembers the electrical interconnection failure, a situation experienced, she says, “with great concern”, but also “as an opportunity to advance the energy transition”.
