Roundtables : Resilience to Climate Change

Thursday, 6th February, start of the Cycle of Round Tables on Resilience to Climate Change at the Ateneu de Maó

The Ateneu de Maó will host this February a series of round tables dedicated to resilience in the face of climate change. Organised by the Ateneu de Maó, Menorca Preservation and GOB Menorca, this cycle will delve into this concept of ecology through specific experiences in four areas: resilience in the agricultural world, in forestry management, in tourism development and in the marine environment. Through presentations, questions and an open debate, strategies and solutions to face the effects of climate change will be explored, especially those that urgently need to be put into practice on an island that is a Biosphere Reserve, such as Menorca.

The series will be held in four sessions every Thursday in February at 7:30 p.m. at the Ateneu de Maó. In each session, experts from different disciplines will give their point of view or present an ongoing experience, with the aim of encouraging an enriching and realistic debate that will provide specific tools for tackling current environmental challenges.

The first round table will focus on agriculture and the second on forestry.

On 6 February, examples of how to tackle the growing problem of drought and desertification through resilient actions, specifically in the protection and conservation of fertile soil, will be discussed.

On 13 February, the topic for discussion will be resilience in forest management, with a special focus on the possibilities offered by extensive livestock farming and its effect on fire risk prevention.

On 20 February, the focus will be on tourism resilience, addressing cases and experiences of deurbanisation.

The final round table, on 27 February, will be devoted to presenting and discussing various experiences in the Balearic Islands of participatory governance for the sustainable management of the marine environment.

Finding adaptive and sustainable solutions to phenomena such as drought, the risk of fire, uncontrolled urbanisation and the degradation of marine ecosystems is therefore the content of the round tables organised jointly by these entities, with the support of Maó Town Council and the Island Council of Menorca.

The sessions will be broadcast live through the Ateneu de Maó’s communication channels, allowing a wide audience to follow the debates and participate in the question and answer session.

Special mention and thanks from the three collaborating entities to the graphic designer, Juan Zacarias, ZACA, who has done his bit by drawing the poster that shows the layout and organisation of the different tables.
