Recreational Fishing in Menorca Under Discussion at a Public Open Event
The Illa de l’Aire Forum will bring together researchers, public authorities and the fishing sector to share knowledge and reflect on the future of recreational fishing on the island
On 1 July, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, the Punta Prima Multi-Purpose Hall (Sant Lluís) will host the event “Recreational Fishing in Menorca: Where Are We and Where Are We Heading?”, an informative and participatory session organised within the framework of the Illa de l’Aire Forum. The event aims to provide the public with up-to-date information on the current state of recreational fishing in Menorca and encourage participation in the conservation of the marine environment.
The session will bring together representatives from different fields involved in the management and study of marine resources. Speakers will include Eva Marsinyach (IME-OBSAM), who will present the results of recreational fishing monitoring in Menorca between 2002 and 2022; Antoni Mira and Iris Barroso (Directorate-General for Fisheries of the Balearic Government), who will explain monitoring data from marine reserves and catch recording tools; Joan Moranta (Jaume Ferrer Research Station / Balearic Islands Oceanographic Centre – IEO-CSIC), who will discuss the reserve effect on coastal fish species vulnerable to fishing pressure; and Eve Galimany and Marta Pujol Baucells (ICATMAR / ICM-CSIC), who will share the experience of recreational fisheries co-management developed in Catalonia.
The initiative stems from the recognised need to improve knowledge of recreational fishing, encourage the sector’s participation in governance processes, and raise awareness of studies and experiences that can contribute to better management of marine resources. The event seeks to create a space for dialogue between recreational fishers, public administrations, the scientific community, organisations and interested members of the public.
Following the presentations, there will be an open discussion session where attendees will be able to ask questions, share concerns and put forward proposals. The event will conclude with light refreshments, providing an opportunity to continue exchanging ideas in a more informal setting.
Participation is free of charge, although advance registration is required for organisational purposes.
