INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROJECT

PlasticLab Menorca is a pioneering initiative promoted by Menorca Preservation through the Plastic Free Menorca Alliance, created to address the environmental and social challenges associated with plastic pollution on the island. In response to this problem, PlasticLab was created as a project that aims to change the way plastic waste is managed in Menorca, promoting the circular economy and sustainability.

This laboratory-workshop is inspired by the open source model Precious Plastic, a global initiative created in 2013 that seeks to democratise plastic recycling through affordable machines and community processes. With this philosophy, the PlasticLab aims to transform plastic waste into new, useful and durable products, while fostering innovation, environmental education and community collaboration.

The workshop will not only focus on plastic waste management, but will also function as a hub from which to educate and raise awareness of the issue. Through practical workshops, primary, secondary and vocational schools, businesses and entrepreneurs, social organisations and the general public will be involved to show how plastic waste can be turned into valuable resources. The ultimate goal of this educational approach is to generate a cultural change towards more responsible and sustainable consumption, based on innovative processes.

The Plastic Lab workspace will have a total area of 80 square metres, equipped with a small office, storage area, plastic washing area and workshop with machinery. Here, the necessary machines for recycling will be installed, such as a shredder to break down plastics into manageable fragments, an extruder to mould the recycled materials into new formats, and a press. These tools will enable plastics collected from the environment to be processed into commercially viable products.

The PlasticLab is presented as an innovative solution to reduce the amount of plastic waste sent to landfill or abandoned in the environment. However, its impact goes beyond the environmental sphere. The project is also expected to have a positive effect on the social sphere, by involving citizens and vulnerable groups in educational and practical activities, and on the economic sphere, by generating new employment opportunities and encouraging the development of value-added recycled products.

In its first three years of operation, the project has initial funding that will allow the purchase of machinery, the execution of educational workshops and the implementation of awareness-raising activities. In the long term, the aim is to ensure the economic viability of PlasticLab through the creation of a special employment centre, strategic alliances with key companies and actors, and local organisations, so the recruitment of this person is key to the development and smooth running of the project.
