Illa de l’Aire – Punta Prima Swim Returns This August

The Illa de l’Aire – Punta Prima Swim returns this summer with a special edition combining sport, nature and a commitment to marine conservation. The event will take place on Thursday 20 August at 6 pm in Punta Prima, bringing back the challenge of swimming across the channel between Illa de l’Aire and Punta Prima beach.

The initiative aims to highlight the Illa de l’Aire Marine Reserve as one of the most emblematic areas along the coastline of Sant Lluís and Menorca: a unique place to enjoy the sea, but also a reminder of the importance of protecting it and using it responsibly.

This year’s swim also has a special significance, as it celebrates the new speed regulations within the Marine Reserve. The new rules limit vessels to a maximum speed of 10 knots and prohibit jet skis within the reserve. Introduced following a request by the Fòrum Illa de l’Aire to Sant Lluís Town Council, the measure represents an important step towards reducing pressure on the marine environment and improving safety for swimmers, sailors and people enjoying non-motorised activities in the channel.

The event also has a charitable element. Participants can make an additional voluntary contribution during registration, which will go entirely towards Menorca Preservation’s Fòrum Illa de l’Aire project, an initiative promoting community participation and the conservation of the Illa de l’Aire Marine Reserve.

The Illa de l’Aire – Punta Prima Swim is organised by Sant Lluís Town Council, with technical coordination by Elitechip and the collaboration of the Fòrum Illa de l’Aire, a community participation initiative led by Menorca Preservation in collaboration with the Marilles Foundation.

There will be two distances. The main 1,500-metre swim will start at Illa de l’Aire and finish at Punta Prima beach, with a maximum of 100 participants. An alternative 1,000-metre swim, starting and finishing at Punta Prima, will also be available for those looking for a more accessible distance.

Race numbers can be collected on Thursday 20 August from 3.30 pm to 5.15 pm at Punta Prima beach. Boats transporting participants in the main swim to Illa de l’Aire will depart at 5.30 pm, with both events starting at 6 pm.

After the swim, participants will be offered refreshments courtesy of Básico restaurant, a member of the Plastic Free Menorca Commitment network, an initiative that promotes the reduction of single-use plastics and encourages more sustainable practices across the island’s tourism and hospitality sectors.

Safety measures will include support boats from the S’Algar Diving, Binibeca Diving and Merak diving centres, medical services, kayaks and course markers, helping to ensure the event takes place in the safest possible conditions and with maximum respect for the marine environment.

The organisers would also like to thank all the organisations and individuals making this edition of the swim possible, particularly Marsave and the Red Cross for their support with the maritime safety operation and the boats helping to ensure the event runs smoothly.
