Learn Through Surfing engages 600 pupils across Menorca

Learn Through Surfing concludes another successful edition, bringing the sea closer to 600 pupils from 14 schools across Menorca

The Learn Through Surfing educational programme has successfully completed another edition in Menorca, introducing 600 pupils from 14 schools across the island to the marine environment through a combination of classroom-based learning and hands-on experiences at the beach.

Led by the environmental non-profit organisation Surf and Clean, with the support of Menorca Preservation, the Spanish Surfing Federation and the Menorca Island Council, and in collaboration with Paddle Tour Menorca and Surf & Sail Menorca, the initiative has once again transformed Menorca’s beaches into spaces for learning, reflection and connection with nature.

Learning to connect with the sea, in and out of the water

Over the past few months, pupils have explored key aspects of the marine environment, from the formation of beaches and coastal biodiversity to the impact of marine litter and the importance of behaving responsibly around wildlife.

Activities at locations including Algaiarens, Cala Tirant and Son Xoriguer enabled students to put classroom learning into practice in the natural environment, encouraging experiential learning and a direct connection with the sea.

“Reflecting on the fact that even the youngest of our beaches is thousands of years old always surprises them, and they begin to realise that, in many cases, our behaviour in these natural environments falls short of what they deserve. Discovering that our everyday habits have an impact on our surroundings, and understanding how these effects ultimately influence our own quality of life, helps them become more aware. Finally, learning to enjoy the sea safely and with greater knowledge inspires them to protect it. It’s all part of the same thing — a timeless relationship that has never changed. We simply need to educate the way we look at it in order to recognise it once again.” says David Blanco, the programme’s coordinator.

About Learn Through Surfing

The programme combines an online educational platform, interactive classroom sessions and practical beach-based activities. Through this approach, it promotes values such as respect, cooperation, empathy, inclusion and environmental responsibility.

Beyond raising awareness, its aim is to encourage lasting changes in the way younger generations relate to the natural environment and to contribute to the conservation of Menorca’s marine ecosystems.

With this latest edition, Learn Through Surfing continues to establish itself as one of Menorca’s leading marine environmental education initiatives. Since its launch in 2021, the programme has enabled almost 3,000 young people to discover the sea through an active, educational and respectful approach.

Sara D’Eustacchio, Communications Manager at Menorca Preservation, said: “Education and knowledge are among the most powerful tools we have to protect nature. At Menorca Preservation, we believe it is essential to support initiatives such as Learn Through Surfing, which help younger generations develop a genuine connection with the sea and understand that its conservation is directly linked to the choices we make every day.”
