GOB Menorca’s 2nd Regenerative Aquaculture Seminar
Climate change and the need to preserve our coastline compel us to find resilient and sustainable alternatives. GOB Menorca’s Regenerative Aquaculture Seminar returns in 2025 to continue addressing these issues and exploring how they can be resolved in an island like Menorca.
What is regenerative aquaculture? Are there precedents for this activity in Menorca? Is it possible to make marine activity compatible with a sustainable model?
The second edition of the Regenerative Aquaculture Seminar will explore these and other questions with contributions from experts and professionals in the field, sharing knowledge, experiences and proposals to help shape the future of aquaculture that is more respectful of marine ecosystems and of society.
The Port of Maó is a natural harbour of great ecological value. However, conserving this unique environment has not always been a priority. Regenerative aquaculture offers the possibility of guaranteeing local economic production while protecting the environment, contributing to the regeneration of marine habitats and diversifying the port’s economy. Promoting other economic activities can also help provide alternatives to conventional fishing, which is facing major challenges such as resource depletion and climate change.
The aim of the seminar is to raise awareness of this practice, to look at traditional activities from a historical perspective, and to provide practical insights that can inspire new initiatives.
Speakers and programme
The event will be held on Saturday 11 October. The first part, featuring two presentations, will take place at the Museu de Menorca.
The seminar will be opened by Adolf Sintes Carreras, historian specialising in ethnology and traditional heritage, with the presentation “Shellfishing in the Port of Maó: A valuable historical heritage with great future potential.”
The second talk will focus on a successful case study: the experience and expertise of researcher Raül Golo, co-founder of the company Alga Brava. His talk, entitled “Innovating in seaweed cultivation for sustainability and the blue economy,” will present the latest research and aquaculture projects currently being developed in the Mediterranean.
After lunch, we will experience aquaculture first-hand with shellfish farmer Paco González. A boat trip will take us to the mussel farms, followed by an onshore visit where the final speaker will explain the characteristics of the shellfish production process and share his vision.
