BeMed supports the work of the Plastic Free Menorca Alliance
The Beyond Plastic Med association awards €10,000 to the Plastic Free Menorca Alliance, the initiative driven by Menorca Preservation focused on reducing plastic pollution on our island

Beyond Plastic Med (BeMed), in its eighth call for micro-initiatives, has granted €10,000 to Menorca Preservation for its “Plastic Free Menorca Alliance”, which is focused on reducing plastic pollution in Menorca, particularly single-use plastics. This funding will enable the Plastic Free Menorca Alliance to certify five businesses in the HORECA sector with the Plastic Free Balearics label; co-finance five outings with educational centres to carry out microplastic collection and analysis activities; expand the PescArt Menorca project by including newly identified, hard-to-recycle waste such as broken parasols or used wetsuits from diving companies; and cover part of the technical support responsible for developing these actions.
“We are very happy to once again receive the support of such an important organisation as Beyond Plastic Med. The first time was in 2020 and, after four years, they have once again placed their trust in this initiative,” said Marta Pérez, coordinator of the Plastic Free Menorca Alliance. “For us, this means we are on the right path with the actions we implement year after year, and the fact that these are recognised as an example within the Mediterranean context is immensely satisfying. We share a delicate sea that we must all care for. If we in Menorca can contribute to this with our experience, we will be very proud.”
BeMed highlights the exemplary nature of this and the other 13 initiatives selected through this call. The organisation is also committed to promoting dialogue and knowledge exchange among the supported entities, in order to strengthen the effectiveness of their actions through the creation of a network of local Mediterranean stakeholders working on the ground, united in the fight against plastic pollution.
Ultimately, BeMed’s purpose is to support innovative, socially responsible solutions for a healthy Mediterranean, working in cooperation with the public and private sectors, NGOs and the scientific community, by promoting local initiatives to collectively tackle a regional issue.
